Accountability—the sense that one’s actions are personally identifiable and subject to the evaluation of others—often acts as a constraint on unchecked power. Individuals in power who know they will be held accountable are more likely to consider social consequences and take others’ interests into account (Lerner & Tetlock, 1999; Tetlock, 1992). This explains why U.S. Presidents exhibit greater cognitive complexity after they are elected, when they are accountable to a diverse array of constituents, than prior to election (Tetlock, 1981).
