Speech pathology eval and insurance
It was only a 5 months wait so we visited the Speech Pathology specialist at NWH on April 28.

The tests where different from school psychologist tests but there was some overlap. These tests were addressing different aspects of language skills (need to put more details here). We spent almost 4 hours in the hospital - mostly with the specialist or waiting for her to score the tests. I believe she had no other evals scheduled for that day. This explains why they have such a long wait.

Report arrived and I called the insurance. From what they told me, if it had been a loss of speech due to the accident, injury or illness they would’ve pre-authorized the therapy. The fact that one has “moderate to severe speech disorder” and that the therapy is helpful in his case is not enough for get pre-authorization for services under this insurance plan.
I asked whether they provide coverage for dyslexics (since he potentially has it in his genes) - they said it has nothing to do with speech. Oh, well, too early to diagnose dyslexia anyway.

I simply do not understand why the speech therapy is so expensive here, in North America. It is one of the most needed services for the children and it must be covered by insurance.
In Canada, it is a little bit different, you can access free services for a while before school through the Health Centres, later through the Department of Learning in the special education classes at schools.

Each province has a special policies so.
Anyway, parents must do a lot of research on this issue:((

Have you concidered an English tutor instead of a speech therapist?
I looked at our university's database of students who is tutoring and found out that there are students with major in English as a Second language and minor in Psychology, for example, who specifically tutor special needs students.

Well, my son is attending a school Special Ed program for the 3d year. I also hired a student who works with him using the materials I get from his Speech Therapist at school.

I hired a student when I realized it will take me forever to get anything through medical insurance. She studying Early Childhood Development, so it's a good match.

I think everything is OK at this point.

In Canada it is a little different.
To be able to attend the Early Education Program five times a week for half-days( from 2.5 to 5.5 years), a child is supposed to have a referral from the health agency.
In our case, I got Edik on the waiting list for the free SLP assessment with the health agency in September 2003. I was told that waiting would take three months, then I was told six, so in December we went to the private SLP and having a report on the hand we started the machine - got into the free program with the health agency which was not successful, got another official assessment that got Edik into the free Early Education Program from the September 2004.

Right now I am exploring other possibilities instead the Early Education Program like SLP who would come to the daycare once a week. It also might be covered by insurance, that is just general insurance for all Canadians.

I am also considering hiring a student in a future, when I will graduate and get a proper job:))

Hopefully, it will happen next winter:))
I too well understand you! My problem is that I am a full time postgraduate student, working woman and mom of two boys, one of whom needs all my help...

Funny enough, in my case I pay less to the student that what I would as insurance co-pay.

There is a Special ED 5 times a week, but my son qualified for 2 days program (0.5 hr of each - SL, PT & OT). Which is fine with me at this point.

Good luck - and kids make progress no matter what in many cases.
