I wish so much I could read Russian, because when I translate it, the imagery is very interesting, but I lose the meaning. I can only imagine, and I am sure I am wrong.

And where do your Russian skills come from, have

I actually have no skills like that. I depend entirely upon the Google translator, the add-on I have on my Firefox, and the kindness of strangers, who are now friends. There is no one in my family even remotely connected to Russia. It was just serendipity that I landed here, but once I did, the overwhelming friendliness of everyone was, to me, astounding and very enjoyable. :)

Such is the luck of a traveller. I wish they'd had
robot translators back in Columbus' days. If not much
help in communication, robots are horrendously beautiful
in a "My hovercraft is full of eels" way. Or in
"Tá m'árthach foluaineach lán d'eascainn" way, as they
suggest here:

Aha, thanks. I did imagine it was something like
that. But I seem to dimly remember stories about
whole villages speaking Gaelic and wiped out by
horrible famine. Must be very old stories, though,
taking all the things into account -- perhaps retold
by children of children of the survivors.
