Одна из наиболее известных картин Петруса Кристуса, входящая во все известные мне книги, посвященные его искусству, находится в музее Метрополитен и изображает святого Элигия. Картина очень известная и тем не менее достаточно странная. Немногое, не вызывающее споров основывается на надписи в нижней части картины: m petr[us] xpi me fecit a 1449 - мастер Петрус Кристус меня сделал в 1449. Также понятно, что действие происходит в ювелирной лавке, а в руке у сидящего мужчины и на его столе - кольца, наводящие на мысль о таинстве венчания.
