Replica Ghost Dance Shirt to go on display at Easterhouse Festival

A replica of the famous Ghost Dance Shirt given back to the Lakota Sioux by Glasgow City Council in 1999 will go on show next week during the Greater Easterhouse Arts Festival.

The replica shirt has been requested by Greater Easterhouse Partnership to become part of their theme for the Greater Easterhouse Arts Festival on Saturday 31 July. The loan of the shirt - to go on display in Easterhouse Sports Centre - has been organised by Glasgow City Council's Open Museum service.

The original Ghost Dance Shirt had been on display at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum having been bought from the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show in the late 19th Century. Glasgow City Council voted to repatriate the shirt in November 1998 and formally handed it over to the Wounded Knee Survivors Association in August 1999.

The replica of the shirt was made by Marcella LeBeau, one of the tribal elders of the Lakota Sioux, and who was closely involved in the repatriation process.

The theme of the festival will be continued with the display of a teepee/wigwam made by a local sewing group.
