Ironic is that big corporations like EA and Activision had teams capable of making high quality products. I.e. EA acquired Westwood which made good RTS games, but then just ruined it by firing and moving people onto projects and technology they are not good with, just because they needed a few programmers to finish soccer game on time. As a result, to remaster Command & Conquer, they had to search and rehire the entire old Westwood team. Blizzard instead just outsourced their shit to chinks, and chinks made they always make - skinned alive dog in a sonic mickey mouse cross over suit.

But yeah, companies like EA are now basically building communism, since they need to regularly sell subpar products made by soviet style teams. And their R&D budget goes into gas lighting consumers, so people will keep buying the product, because it is normal to do that.

To my mind, the big corporations excel at making big money, which does necessarily equates to making great games or great works of art at all. The game should be good enough to sell and attract the micro-transactions addicted wankers what would finance it for the rest of its life cycle.

Since BG3 does not have micro-transactions, they would have to rely heavily on getting much more content so to keep their income flow stable after the initial release. Thus EA/ActiBlizz will win because why Larian will be making great content, these big fat cats will be selling skins for their shooters and loot boxes for their other games like crazy.

Only if they manage to maintain status quo, dictating customers what they must expect, while preventing other from making quality content. But yeah, some gamers love casino style gameplay.

It is as simple as people being rather dim on average.
If you have theatres and cabarets, the cabarets will be much more popular.

However, the average level of the major content creators being so low has a distinct positive property of creating a hotbed for the artisan game developers who can deliver the quantity over quality.

Unfortunately, having both great quality and popularity is rather an exception for a video game than an every-day occurrence.
