Two quotes bank runs can be obviated by deposit insurance because depositors know that if all else fails, the sovereign will pay off the deposits by, if necessary, borrowing money using bonds which, if necessary, will be bought by the central bank using, if necessary, newly printed money. Because of these perceptions, the measures referred to above are almost never "necessary" because there aren't bank runs Philip Mause, The Eurozone Mess Deconstructed: Germany's Legitimate Concern
They’d saved the city with gold more easily, at that point, than any hero could have managed with steel. But, in truth, it had not exactly been gold, or even the promise of gold, but more like the fantasy of gold, the fairy dream that the gold is there, at the end of the rainbow, and will continue to be there forever—provided, naturally, that you don’t go and look.

“Another Bubble” In Housing? It Could Happen, Says Yale’s Robert Shiller Shiller cites Boston as one area for a potential echo-bubble in housing, noting its typically volatile market did not fall in the past two years as dramatically as "more bubbly" cities like Phoenix.

[Link] | Guess I'm not the only one comparing D vs R presidents' effect on economy: Despite 'market friendly' Republican policies, stocks rise more and volatility dips under Democrats.
what these numbers show almost beyond doubt is that Democrats are better at virtually every economic task that is important to Republicans
Data for the whole period from 1948 to 2007 [...] show average annual growth of real gross national product of 1.64 percent per capita under Republican presidents versus 2.78 percent under Democrats.

Golden Arches Safer Than Uncle Sam? http://seekingalpha.com/article/97571-golden-arches-safer-than-uncle-sam Word on the street is that the credit risk of the Golden Arches are better than Uncle Sam. VS.
5 Year Credit Default Swaps on McDonald’s Corp are trading at 24 to 29bp while US Credit Default Swaps are trading 30bp. This means that it is more expensive to buy protection against a default of the US government than a bankruptcy of Mickey D.

FDIC May Need $150 Billion Bailout
It won't take many more failures before the FDIC itself runs out of money. The agency had $45.2 billion in its coffers as of June 30, far short of the $200 billion Whalen says it will need to pay claims by the end of next year. ... A federal takeover of Washington Mutual, which has assets of $310 billion, could cost taxpayers $24 billion more, according to Richard Bove, an analyst at Miami-based Ladenburg Thalmann & Co.
WaMu failed today (see my previous post). So after this FDIC will have half the money it had...

Republicans are good for economy? Let's assume the president does affect the economy. Let's assume Dow Jones is valid approximation for the economy status. Let's assume CPI is a valid approximator for inflation. Let's take the Dow-Jones values at the beginning and end of presidents' terms and compare how Democratic presidents do vs Republicans. (I took DJIA values from http://finance.yahoo.com/q/hp?s=^DJI ; CPI numbers from http://inflationdata.com/inflation/Consumer_Price_Index/HistoricalCPI.aspx - all of them January numbers except August for 2008)
The results are - during the 7 Republican terms (Nixon, Nixon/Ford, Reagan, Reagan 2, Bush, Bush Jr, Bush Jr 2) DJIA multiplied by 3.667; during the 5 Democratic (JFK/LBJ, LBJ, Carter, Clinton, Clinton 2) - by 4.765; the CPI-adjusted DJIA multiplied by 1.088 under Republicans and by 2.184 under Democrats. So the end result is - any growth caused by Republican presidents is eaten by inflation caused by their excessive spending. Party of small government, indeed.
