Anthracosaurus is an extinct genus of labyrinthodont that lived in the Carboniferous period. Anthracosaurus belongs to the suborder of Embolomeri. Anthracosaurus from the Late Carboniferous some 310 million years ago, was a large, aquatic eel-like predator. It could reach up to 12 feet in length, and its jaws were full of sharp teeth. Anthracosaurus inhabited swamps, rivers and lakes in what is now Scotland. Its name is Greek for "coal lizard".
