the author did not pay enough attention to the camp previous to the last one.
that was so ridiculously strange day before the last night that any meticulous investigator must pay as much attention to the previous camp as to the last camp.

the whole day was literally ruined since the very beginning, and in the way that could be obvious to any member of the troop.

if one is looking for a "mysterious" force that drove these people to an apparent madness, it is reasonably probable that this "force" was appeared on the scene long before the night of the tent mutilation.
