My next comparison is between off-beat mathematics
and main-stream mathematics. Mathematics, we feel, has
a sort of core, the main problems in mathematics can
be cumulatively built up, sifted out and the important
ones retained. We have the main-stream of mathematics
flowing but we have lots of tributaries, lots of side-
streams that come in and feed the main-stream. You
have to decide whether you want to work as centrally
as possible in mathematics or whether you want to go
off on your own and try to discover interesting areas
that have not been looked at before. Again we
undoubtedly need both kinds of mathematician. The genuine
pioneers are those who go off on their own, deciding
that they do not want to get involved with anything that
has been done before. They are going to start afresh and
look at something from an entirely novel point of view,
and the really new creations in mathematics and the
really new fields that enter undoubtedly are produced by
pioneers who started in this way. Of course the danger of
this is that there are a few successful pioneers but many
unsuccessful ones. If you go digging for gold, one man
finds gold and the rest do not. So you have to recognise
that, when you go off the beaten track into the wilds,
you may do some mathematics and if you are lucky it
may be recognised as a tremendous new addition to
mathematics, but 99 per cent, of the time the reaction
will be “yes, very interesting, but it does not seem to get
anywhere.” So you have to take your chance, it is a bit
of a gamble that you will turn up a really successful
gold mine and not simply a lot of rough ground.

However, the difficulty of staying in the main-stream of
mathematics is that this area has been worked on by the
most famous mathematicians in the past, and therefore to
contribute new things within the central core of
mathematics is that much more difficult. If you do contribute to
that area then hopefully, since it is in the main-stream
of mathematics, it will be that much more important.

ну это явно не то
в том смысле, что есть экзотические области, которые требуют
колоссального объема знаний (манинская наука про умножение
на кубических поверхностях, например, или изучение трудов
Шиничи Мочизуки), а есть вполне себе что ни на есть майнстрим,
который ничего вообще не требует (какая-нибудь гипотеза Бибербаха)
и вообще ни с какой наукой не пересекается, по типу олимпиадно-
комбинаторных задач

в этом отрывке Атия определяет майстрим как то,
где сотни человек прошли и все истоптали
(и такой математикой, действительно, заниматься сейчас
очень трудно, потому что почти любую задачу кто-нибудь
уже решил, так что больше усилий уходит на просеивание
литературы, чем на решение задачи)

но как раз продвинутая математика в этом плане
территория вполне девственная, какую-нибудь purity
for mixed Hodge modules понимает всего полтора человека
и статей, где они упоминаются, может быть двести.

то есть деление майнстрим/немайнстрим
равно делению вторая культура/первая, причем
майнстрим это как раз вторая культура
(всякая комбинаторная и аналитическая тупость,
которая не требует знакомства с литературой после
1880-го года), а немайнстрим именно первая
культура, которая хочет, чтобы человек сначала
прочел "Гипотезы Вейля II"
