Ilya Khrzhanovsky: an apology
On 23 April 2020 we published an article headed “Ukrainian prosecutors investigate Dau film project over alleged torture of children”. Mr Khrzhanovsky was the director of the Dau film project, as was stated in the article. The article said that prosecutors in the city of Kharkiv in Ukraine had opened a criminal probe into alleged abuse of children during the filming of Dau, along with allegations of ‘coercion’ and sexual abuse. This was based on an announcement by the Prosecutor’s Office of the Kharkiv Region of Ukraine. The implication was that Mr Khrzhanovsky was suspected on reasonable grounds of permitting such criminal acts against children to take place on set. We accept that Mr Khrzanovsky did not behave in the manner alleged in our article and apologise to Mr Khrzhanovsky. The article has been removed from the website, and we have agreed to pay Mr Khrzhanovsky damages - which he will donate to the Campaign Against Antisemitism - and his costs.
