Cyrtodactylus arnei
Q. H. Do, Ngo, Nguyen, Le, Ziegler, D. T. Do & Pham, 2025

Abstract
A new species of the genus Cyrtodactylus is described from Khanh Hoa Province, South-central Vietnam based on genetic divergence and morphological differences. Cyrtodactylus arnei sp. nov. is distinguished from the remaining Indochinese bent–toed geckos of the Cyrtodactylus irregularis group by having the unique combination of the following characteristics: size medium (SVL 70.9–78.0 mm); dorsal tubercles in 15–17 irregular rows; 34 or 35 ventral scale rows; 12–15 enlarged femoral scales on each side, in continuous series without gap between precloacal and femoral scales; precloacal pores absent in females, 5–7 in males, in a continuous row; femoral pores absent; postcloacal spurs 0–3 on each side; 19–21 lamellae under toe IV; dorsal pattern between limb insertions consisting of four narrow light bands with dark edges and a transversal row of dark spots in the middle; subcaudal scales enlarged, forming broad transverse plates. In phylogenetic analyses, the new species was nested within the Cyrtodactylus irregularis group without any clear sister taxon. Genetically, Cyrtodactylus arnei sp. nov. is divergent from other species within the Cyrtodactylus irregularis group by at least 10.97% (COI) and 14.39% (ND2) based on two fragments of the mitochondrial gene.

Diagnosis. The new species can be distinguished from other members of the Cyrtodactylus irregularis group by a combination of the following characteristics: size medium (SVL 70.9–78.0 mm); dorsal tubercles in 15–17 irregular rows; 34 or 35 ventral scale rows; 12–15 enlarged femoral scales on each side, in continuous series without gap between precloacal and femoral scales; precloacal pores absent in females, 5–7 in males, in a continuous row; femoral pores absent; postcloacal spurs 0–3 on each side; 19–21 lamellae under toe IV; dorsal pattern between limb insertions consisting four narrow light bands with dark edges and a transversal row of dark spots in the middle; subcaudal scales enlarged, forming broad transverse plates.

Etymology. The new species is named after Dr. Arne Schulze, Executive Director of the Zoological Society for Conservation of Species and Populations (ZGAP) to honor his great commitment and support for herpetological research and conservation in Vietnam, in particular within the scope of the Zoo Species of the Year – The Gecko Conservation Campaign 2024.

Pools of sorrow, waves of joy Are drifting through my opened mind, possessing and caressing me.

[Herpetology • 2025] Cyrtodactylus chure & C. makwanpurgadhiensis • Two New Species of Cyrtodactylus Gray, 1827 (Squamata: Gekkonidae) from Nepal [Sep. 24th, 2025|02:19 pm]

Two new species of Cyrtodactylus from the khasiensis group are described using morphological characters supported by molecular analyses based on the mitochondrial ND2 gene. Cyrtodactylus makwanpurgadhiensis sp. nov. and C. chure sp. nov. from the Siwalik Mountains in central Nepal are at least 11.2% divergent from other Nepalese congeners and 16.7% from each other and can be distinguished by a combination of morphometric and meristic traits. The description of two new species from the Siwalik Mountains underscores the conservation significance of this region, a relatively young, dry, and geologically unstable range of the Himalayan orogen. Despite serving as a border between the lowland (Terai) and Himalayan range, it remains underrepresented in both biodiversity assessments and conservation planning in Nepal. Our findings suggest the need for a robust and targeted species research program and to prioritise this landscape for conservation actions.

[Paleontology • 2025] Thikarisuchus xenodentes • A New, diminutive, heterodont Neosuchian from the Vaughn Member of the Blackleaf Formation (Cenomanian), southwest Montana, and Implications for the Paleoecology of heterodont neosuchians [Sep. 25th, 2025|01:48 am]

ABSTRACT
Although crocodyliforms from the Campanian–Maastrichtian of North America have received considerable attention, taxa occurring earlier in the Cretaceous have only recently begun to be more thoroughly studied. Of particular interest amongst these recent discoveries is the heterodont neosuchian Wannchampsus kirpachi Adams 2014 and the similar, undescribed ‘Glen Rose Form’ (USNM 22039). Both hold an unclear phylogenetic position, either forming a clade sister to Atoposauridae, a group of small, heterodont neosuchians from the Jurassic and Cretaceous of Laurasia, or to Paralligatoridae, a clade of larger, platyrostral, homodont neosuchians from the Cretaceous of Asia and North America. Here we describe a new species of diminutive, heterodont neosuchian, Thikarisuchus xenodentes gen. et sp. nov., from the early–middle Cenomanian Vaughn Member of the Blackleaf Formation of southwest Montana. The specimen includes cranial, mandibular, axial, and appendicular elements in articulation and dense concentration. It is recovered in a sister relationship with Wannchampsus and USNM 22039. We propose the name Wannchampsidae (clade nov.) for this group of small, heterodont neosuchians endemic to the Cretaceous of North America. Wannchampsidae is more confidently recovered sister to Atoposauridae due to the recognition of new synapomorphies. The new taxon provides greater clarity on the potential diet and paleoecology of Wannchampsidae and Atoposauridae and displays similar craniomandibular and dental characteristics to the notosuchian group Uruguaysuchidae, strongly suggesting these neosuchian groups were also omnivorous or insectivorous and terrestrially adapted, respectively representing a unique diet and reversion to terrestriality within Neosuchia.

CROCODYLIFORMES Hay, 1930 (sensu Clark, 1986)
NEOSUCHIA Clark in Benton and Clark, 1988

WANNCHAMPSIDAE, family nov.

Type Genus—Wannchampsus kirpachi Adams, 2014.

Etymology—'The family of Wannchampsus.’ The stem Wannchamps- is based on the designated type genus Wannchampsus. -idae, is a Latin patronymic suffix.

Under Article 29.2 of the Zoological Code, the suffix -idae denotes a family rank within the family-group.

Phylogenetic Definition—Branch-based clade comprising all taxa more closely related to Wannchampsus kirpachi Adams, 2014 than to Theriosuchus pusillus Owen, 1878 or Shamosuchus djadochtaensis Mook, 1924.

Skeletal diagram of preserved elements of Thikarisuchus xenodentes (MOR 11969). Preserved ribs and osteoderms are not shown. Silhouette based off Araripesuchus spp., illustrating the convergence in craniodental characteristics and terrestrial affinities between these distantly related crocodyliform taxa.

THIKARISUCHUS XENODENTES, gen. et sp. nov.

Locality, Horizon, and Age—Vaughn Member of the upper portions of the Blackleaf Formation (early–middle Cenomanian). Material originates from The Mound (BL-9) in the Lima Peaks area of southwest Montana, southeast of the town of Lima, MT and was recovered on the surface in float or was surface screened, sifted, and later identified/recovered within the lab.

Diagnosis—A small neosuchian crocodyliform with the following unique combination of characters (autapomorphies denoted by an asterisk): longitudinal groove on posterior dentary laterally adjacent to dentary toothrow for reception of posterior maxillary teeth*; extreme mesiodistal elongation and low apicobasal height of posterior ‘low crowned’ maxillary and dentary teeth*; development of frontoparietal midline ridge into a symmetric, elongate hexagonal boss at frontal-parietal suture*; extension of lateral angular ridge onto lateral surface of posterior dentary*; oreinirostral snout; anteriorly oriented external nares; small, anteroposteriorly aligned sulcus present posterior to triple junction of sutures of the premaxilla, maxilla, and nasals; orbitonasal sulcus (sensu Turner, 2015) on lateral surface of maxilla; occlusal pit on palatal process of maxilla adjacent to 4th and 5th maxillary teeth; ventral surface of posterolateral portion of palatal process of maxilla possesses a shallow groove that accommodates some posterior dentary teeth; internal choana bounded almost entirely by pterygoids, with palatines contributing to anterior margin; procoelous cervical, dorsal, and caudal vertebrae; humeral head convex, with the center of the humeral head positioned proximally above the rest of the surface; humerus proximal to deltopectoral crest strongly deflected medially at ∼45° compared with humeral shaft; highly reduced postacetabular process of ilium; elongate proximal process on fibula.

Etymology—After “thikari,” the diminutive form of the Greek word “thiki” meaning sheath, referring to the way in which the posterior maxillary teeth ‘sheath’ within the longitudinal groove on the dentary adjacent to the dentary toothrow as well as the diminutive size of the specimen, and “suchus,” from the Latinized form of “soukhos,” Greek for crocodile. After “xeno,” Greek for strange, and “dentes,” Latin for teeth, referring to the strange heterodont dentition and extremely mesiodistally elongate and apicobasally low posterior teeth.

 Gomes, Sarmento-Soares, Martins-Pinheiro & Leite, 2025
 Xenurolebias izecksohni,  X. cricarensis

Abstract
The Atlantic Forest coastal tablelands is home to a wide diversity of small-sized freshwater fish sharing a biogeographically congruent distributional pattern. The annual killifish Xenurolebias are among these remarkable inhabitants in the riparian wetlands with four species in the area. Xenurolebias pataxo are located between the Jucuruçu and Mucuri rivers, geographically replaced by Xenurolebias myersi at the Riacho Doce and the Rio Itaúnas, and, further south, Xenurolebias cricarensis are in the floodplains of the Rio São Mateus and Xenurolebias izecksohni, living in temporary environments of the Rio Barra Seca, north of the Rio Doce. Due to their restricted habitat in the lowlands, these annual killifish could all be designated as a target species, providing benefits in the conservation of riparian wetlands. However, less is known about their habits and real distribution. Otherwise, the accelerated habitat loss is worrisome. Two of these species are threatened with extinction on Red Lists; one is Near-Threatened; and one is Data-Deficient. After ten years since the last species description, our investigations revealed a fifth species, the first recorded south of Rio Doce. The present contribution aims to characterize the occupied habitat by each species within the temporary environments and present an updated distributional data on these fish. Additionally, a new Xenurolebias is described, the first one recorded south of Rio Doce.

Keywords: Atlantic Forest; Rio Riacho; swamp; cloud fish; endemism

Xenurolebias tupinikin sp. nov.

Diagnosis. Xenurolebias tupinikin is distinguished from remaining congeners by adult males presenting in life a dark blotch overlapping the median portion of the last stripe on the caudal peduncle (Figure 2). It further differs from congeners, except X. myersi, by presenting the dorsal and anal fin borders with a black outline. Additionally, it is distinct from X. myersi by a body depth of 25.9–27.9 in SL (vs. 29.0–31.4 in SL).
It differs from X. izecksohni and X. cricarensis by the caudal fin in males with 5–6 bars (vs. 7–14 bars) and by male head depth 64.5–76.9% of HL (vs. 81.2–85.6% of head length in males). It further differs from X. pataxo and X. myersi due to no yellow spots on the distal half of the dorsal fin in males (vs. yellow spots present).

Etymology. The specific name is a reference to the Tupiniquim Indigenous people, inhabitants of lowlands in the central north of Espírito Santo. On the left margin of the Rio Comboios is the Indigenous land Comboios (Figure 4, green stripes near coast), which corresponds to the nearest human occupation relative to the environments inhabited by these fish.

Triplophysa baishuijiangensis Shi, Chen, Yang & X.-A. Wang,

in Shi, Chen, Che, Dao, Liu, D.-S. Wang, Yang et X.-A. Wang, 2025.

Abstract
Triplophysa baishuijiangensis sp. nov., a new cave-dwelling loach, was collected from an underground river outlet in Xiaoganxi Village, Yiliang County, Yunnan Province, China, situated within the core area of the Baishuijiang National Aquatic Germplasm Resources Reserve for Endemic Fish, part of the Hengjiang–Jinsha River system. The new species is distinguished from congeners by significant genetic divergence and the following combination of characteristics: vestigial eyes, absence of skin pigmentation, pelvic fin tip reaching the anus, complete lateral line, developed posterior chamber of the swim bladder, and dorsal fin rays iii-7. Phylogenetic analysis based on Cyt b positions this new species in the hypogean group of Triplophysa, increasing the documented cave species in the genus from 42 to 43. Triplophysa baishuijiangensis sp. nov. represents the first documented typical cavefish in the Jinsha River basin, underscoring the region’s ecological significance for subterranean adaptation and suggesting unexplored cave biodiversity that merits systematic investigation.

Revision of the  group (, ) using  and  markers. Scientiports. 13: 16996.

Abstract
To approach the taxonomy of large and complex animal groups it is of advantage to focus on species groups with shared derived character state. We investigate the composition, morphological characteristics and relationships of and within the Schistura cincticauda species group, whose members are small freshwater fishes that inhabit streams and rivers in eastern Myanmar and western and southern Thailand. A phylogenetic analysis using molecular genetic markers demonstrated the monophyly of this group; a combined genetic and morphological analysis revealed the inclusion of at least twelve species. They share the presence of a pair of black marks on the lower lip, one on each side of the median interruption (these marks may be reduced to few melanophores or even missing in some individuals). Additionally, all species share a small body size (max. 60 mm SL), an incomplete lateral line reaching at most to vertical through anal-fin base, and the absence of sexual dimorphism. Each of the 12 species is diagnosed by a unique combination of character states in fin ray numbers, anus position, presence/absence of an axillary pelvic lobe, and colour pattern. The distribution areas of several species overlap and five cases of syntopic occurrence are known. Five unnamed species are described herein.

Schistura ataranensis, new species

Distribution Known only from the upper Ataran River drainage, in Myanmar.

Etymology Named after River Ataran, where the type series was collected. An adjective, -is, -is, -e.

Remarks Schistura ataranensis is traded as ornamental fish since at least 2006 under names like ‘Sumo loach’, ‘Sumo loach II’, ‘Schistura cf. balteata’22. However, pictures of fishes from the ornamental fish trade suggest that additional species are confused under these names.

The new species described in the present study.
(A) Schistura ataranensis, ZRC 61579, holotype, 43.5 mm SL; Myanmar: Kayin province: Ataran drainage; (B) Schistura hartli, ZRC 61581, holotype, 41.0 mm SL; Thailand: Surat Thani Province: Khao Sok; (C) Schistura myaekanbawensis, MHNG 2790.081, holotype, 29.8 mm SL; Myanmar: Tanintharyi Region: Tanintharyi drainage;
(D) Schistura kuehnei, ZRC 61582, holotype, 37.1 mm SL; Thailand: Surat Thani Province: Tapi drainage, Khlong Sok watershed;. (E) Schistura peninsulae, ZRC 61584, holotype, 35.6 mm SL; Malaysia: Kedah province: Langkawi Island.

Schistura hartli, new species

Distribution Known only from three specimens, collected in Khao Sok NP in a small forest stream (Fig. 7). Exact position of the locality unknown.

Etymology Named for Andreas Hartl, who collected the type material. Noun in genitive, indeclinable.

Schistura myaekanbawensis, new species

Schistura kuehnei, new species

Distribution Known only from a small forest stream draining from Khao Sok NP into stream Khlong Sok (River Tapi drainage) in Surat Thani province (Fig. 7); at the type locality it co-occurs with S. robertsi.

Etymology Named after Jens Kühne, in acknowledgement of his long-time support of our ichthyological work in Southeast Asia. Noun in genitive, indeclinable.

Schistura peninsulae, new species

Etymology Named after its wide distribution on the Malay Peninsula; it also is the most southern species of Schistura on the Malay Peninsula. A noun in genitive, indeclinable.

Bayesian tree of the concatenated dataset (mitochondrial cytochrome b plus nuclear IRBP 2 genes) showing the phylogenetic relationships of the species of the Schistura cincticauda species group and the proposed position of S. paucifasciata as concluded from its shared rare pigmentation element with S. balteata. The Bayesian (BAY) and maximum likelihood (ML) analyses revealed congruent topologies; the rectangles at the nodes indicate the posterior probabilities and bootstrap support. The map indicates the geographic origin of the analysed samples of the species. Colours in the tree correspond to colours in map; the values at the nodes represent the posterior possibilities.

Sometimes you need to be an asshole to protect yourself against people who just won't get it.

Even if you don't want to: some situations require a level of ruthlessness.

It's that or you submit & let them waste away your time and energy

Abstract
Recent fossil discoveries have cast considerable light on the palaeobiology of Megaraptora, a group of large-clawed carnivorous theropod dinosaurs known from Cretaceous deposits in Asia, Australia, and especially South America. Nevertheless, many important aspects of megaraptoran morphology and evolution remain poorly understood, due in large part to the fragmentary nature of most fossils of these theropods and the scarcity of anatomically overlapping skeletal elements among the known taxa. Here we report a previously unknown megaraptoran genus and species represented by a partially articulated partial skeleton recovered from an uppermost Cretaceous stratum of the Lago Colhué Huapi Formation of south-central Chubut Province in central Patagonia, Argentina. Pertaining to the derived megaraptoran subclade Megaraptoridae, the taxon is among the most completely represented and latest-surviving megaraptorans. Its stratigraphic occurrence indicates that these dinosaurs likely persisted to the Cretaceous/Palaeogene boundary; moreover, the preservation of a crocodyliform humerus between the dentaries of the new theropod may provide information on megaraptoran dietary preferences and feeding strategies. Megaraptorids appear to have been the apex predators in central and southern Patagonian palaeoecosystems approaching the end of the Cretaceous, in contrast to more northerly areas of South America where these niches were occupied by other non-avian theropod groups.

Joaquinraptor casali gen. et sp. nov.

Etymology: Joaquín, in tribute to the son of the first author (L.M.I.) and the informal name given to the locality when the skeleton of the taxon was discovered (Valle Joaquín); Latin, raptor, thief. Specific epithet casali in recognition of Dr. Gabriel Andrés Casal for his many contributions to knowledge of the Cretaceous palaeontology and geology of central Patagonia (including the formal recognition and naming of the formation from which this megaraptorid was recovered).
