Allison Stanger (весьма либеральных взглядов) за
попытку участия в дебатах после лекции Чарльза Мюррея,
автора известной книги The Bell Curve. Выступление тоже сорвали,
то есть орали все время, пока Мюррей пытался разговаривать.
Когда она пыталась вывезти Мюррея из кампуса после
несостоявшейся лекции, на них снова напали, отпиздили
профессоршу до сотрясения мозга, и сломали ей
шею ко всему прочему.

Вообще американские профессора сейчас массово жалуются на студентов,
что те дескать требуют цензуры, safe spaces, trigger warnings,
а профессора хотят свободы слова. Раньше студенты
требовали свободы слова, а университетское начальство
с ней боролось и пиздило студентов, а теперь наоборот:
студенты пиздят и затыкают тех, кто высказывается
скептически в адрес официальной идеологии.

...I stood at the podium. I didn't make any attempt to
speak-no point in it-but I did make eye contact with
students. I remember one in particular, from whom I
couldn't look away for a long time. She reminded me of my
daughter Anna (Middlebury '07) - partly physically, but
also in her sweet earnestness. She looked at me
reproachfully and a little defiantly, her mouth moving in
whatever the current chant was. I'm probably projecting,
but I imagined her to be a student who wasn't particularly
political but had learned that this guy Murray was truly
evil. So she found herself in the unfamiliar position of
activist, not really enjoying it, but doing her civic
duty.

The others.... Wow. Some were just having a snarky good
time as college undergrads have been known to do, dancing
in the aisle to the rhythm of the chants. But many looked
like they had come straight out of casting for a film of
brownshirt rallies. In some cases, I can only describe
their eyes as crazed and their expressions as
snarls. Melodramatic, I know. But that's what they looked
like.

такими анти-бумерами, и пройдет по жизни, надевая на баб
паранджу, затыкая рты профессорам, и требуя массовых
расстрелов за неортодоксию.

какая-то параллельная реальность. Я ни разу не встречал ни в одном из своих классов каких-то протестующих студентов. Один раз, правда, был студент, который во время лекции о законе Фарадея почему-то заметил, что Трамп идиот. Так и сказал: "trump is an idiot". Я не стал его спрашивать почему он так считает и при чем тут Трамп. Просто посмотрел на него и дальше читал лекцию. Это единственная история за 11 лет. Знакомые мои в ЮПене, Норфвестерне, ЮСиЭлЭй никаких жутких историй тоже не рассказывают. Между тем, я слышу постоянно о протестах, каких-то там блокадах и прочем гавне.

But what is happening in Berkeley in 2017 is completely different. Instead of protesters rallying against authoritarianism and state power (the Free Speech Movement protested against the University of California’s decision not to let people distribute political materials on campus; the fight for People’s Park was against the university and the National Guard) these are fights among citizens.

I feel like Berkeley has become the ground zero of a new civil war.

The first clue of the ferocity of this fight came Feb. 1, when former Breitbart writer and self-proclaimed “dangerous faggot” Milo Yiannopolous was scheduled to speak at UC Berkeley. While local media had reported the pushback by liberal professors, most everyone was surprised when an army of people dressed in black, their faces hidden by ski masks and bandanas, marched onto campus around 5:00 p.m. and began swinging sticks, setting objects on fire, and attacking pro-Trump attendees.

UC Berkeley cancelled Yiannopolous’s talk and the black bloc or Antifas, as they call themselves, then swarmed through the downtown, looting a Starbucks, and smashing store windows and ATM machines of Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Chase, and Mechanics Bank.

The violence of the riot garnered national
attention. Rather than blaming the black-clad protesters
for the violence, many on the right blamed UC Berkeley and
Berkeley residents for squashing free speech, just yards
away from where the original Free Speech Movement began on
Sproul Plaza in 1964. President Trump tweeted that maybe
funding to UC Berkeley should be cut.

It is more difficult to identify those in the Antifa movement as they cover their faces, tend to keep their personal identities quiet on social media, and eschew talking to the press. They can be identified by the groups calling for action, such as Berkeley Antifa or BAMN, standing for By Any Means Necessary. Their social media postings reveal that their sole intent on Saturday was to stop the pro-Trump and far right groups from even speaking. The notion of allowing an exchange of ideas is anathema to black-block and anti-fascists groups.

Their members believe “fascist white supremacists should
not be granted the right to express their views in
public,” Mark Bray, a visiting historian at Dartmouth
College and the author of Translating Anarchy: The
Anarchism of Occupy Wall Street told Brook Gladstone on
WYNC’s On the Media.

вызывают еще больше неприятных эмоций, чем BAMN)

an enemy like the Zionists, you do not deny any avenue of
resistance...[including] armed resistance".

· At University of California San Diego, a professor posted on her door
the image of a young girl wearing a t-shirt saying "I [heart] Hamas."

· At the University of California Los Angeles, attendees carried tote bags
bearing the slogan "Make Israel Palestine Again" at the National
Students for Justice in Palestine conference, and the same slogan
appeared on placards displayed by students at anti-Israel rallies at the
University of Houston and the University of California Davis.

· At the University of Michigan, three academic departments sponsored
an event at which the speaker claimed that it was "unjustifiable...that
such a thing as a Jewish majority state ought to exist at the expense of
those who can lay claim to that land historically."

· A speaker at an SJP event at Emanuel College said, "Yes, it is Palestine,
it will always be Palestine... We lost some of it in `48 we lost the rest of
it in `67, we're gonna get it back."

· An SJP-authored op-ed in the student newspaper at the University of
California Davis stated, "[I]t is an ideological fantasy to really believe
that progress is possible so long as the state of Israel exists...The goal of
Palestinian resistance is...to completely dismantle those forces at play."
