Wow, never thought I would see such an article written by a (formerly) high-ranking Republican.
While his general message is strongly pro-austerity and anti-Keynesian, he has some interesting, to say the least, rhetoric.
Some choice cuts:
- mutant crony capitalism that periodically lavishes the top 1 percent with speculative windfalls
- The culprits are bipartisan, though you’d never guess that from the blather that passes for political discourse these days
- a tax-cutting spree for the wealthy that turned K Street lobbyists into the de facto office of national tax policy. In effect, the G.O.P. embraced Keynesianism — for the wealthy
- another front in the G.O.P.’s war against the 99 percent

State-Wrecked: The Corruption of Capitalism in America
By DAVID A. STOCKMAN, former Republican congressman from Michigan, President Ronald Reagan’s budget director.

You can't make this stuff up
Why do you think Romney lost?
Maybe because he didn't have support with women? Hispanics? Blacks? Asians?
No, it's because he didn't have enough money.
This is not The Onion, this is Wall Street Journal's analysis!

Assuming Paul Ryan's plan is perfectly implemented, and no terrorist or military events in the next 30 years occur, which increase our costs, and no more financial crises occur, then the national budget should be balanced by the time a lot of the people reading this will be dead.

I wholeheartedly agree with this: "The heated rhetoric and insults that are flying about in Washington today are merely camouflage for the fact that the two dominant parties are occupying a very narrow part of the political spectrum. "

screamager адкапаў цудоўнае
The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.

Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here'. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.

Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities.

Scott Brown is for small government and lower taxes, right?
Right?
Brown to Patrick: Spend stimulus funds
U.S. Senator-elect Scott Brown said yesterday he was frustrated with the pace of the state's economic stimulus spending, charging that Gov. Deval Patrick had not been putting the money to work fast enough.

"The governor has a lot of stimulus money, and he hasn't released it," Brown said.

Not voting today
Not going to vote today. I don't have "my" candidate in this race.
The chances of Brown winning by precisely one vote are so close to zero it doesn't make sense to get my ass out there, while it's snowing.
If he wins, it will not be the end of the world.

First, that seat is up for reelection in 2012 anyway, so the winner gets only less than 3 years in the office.

Second, he never ever showed like he's capable of doing something. Quoth the raven philg:
The biggest knock against him is that he has spent 15 years as a Republican in the Massachusetts legislature, both in the house and senate. Aside from collecting a fat salary and generous pension, what would motivate a person to do that? The legislature meets all year every year. As it has been controlled by Democrats for decades, the meetings serve no purpose. The Party's senior officials could decide what they want to do with the state, write it up in one big document, and have the Democrat-controlled legislature approve it in one hour. A Republican has the right to collect a paycheck, the right to attend votes, the right to sit in on some meetings, but could not possibly influence the outcome in any way (and indeed his Web site does not claim that he ever got any specific law passed). If Brown wanted to accomplish anything as a politician, he would have had to move to New Hampshire or switch to the ruling party. But he did not do either of those things, which means that he has essentially done nothing for a good chunk of his professional life.

So I don't expect much harm from Sen.Brown

Third, if Brown wins, there will be ways to pass healthcare law without him. First, the House can simply agree to pass the Senate's bill, so that there will be no new Senate vote needed at all. Second, Federal law says that the final tally cannot be issued for at least 10 days after the election to allow overseas absentee ballots to arrive. The idea is that the least we can do for our fighting men and women overseas is to make sure their votes are counted. To issue a cetificate of election before their votes were counted would be an insult to them--not to mention basis for a court challenge. After the 10 days are up, up to five more days may be needed to resolve provisional ballots, which means there is no legal way for a certificate of election to be issued before Jan. 29. If even one of the 351 local election officials needs the full 5 days to resolve the provisional ballots, we are looking at Feb. 3. And if the election is close, the loser may demand a recount, which, as we saw in Minnesota last year, cannot be completed with a single click on some electoral mouse. (read the rest of the entry on electoral-vote, it's very informative)

On filibusters
Just posted this as a comment on Daily Mull

I don't understand what the big deal about the filibuster is. Why suddenly to pass a law you need not 51, but 60 votes in the Senate?
Let them filibuster! The longest filibuster in history - talking for 24 hours and 18 minutes - was by Sen. Strom Thurmond, who was opposing the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Guess what? The bill passed anyway. Why does a mere threat of filibuster makes Harry Reid all scared?

Congressman Kucinich Addresses Escalation in Afghanistan

Dear Friends,

Tonight the President will announce an escalation of the war in Afghanistan. An additional 30,000 troops will bring the United States' total in Afghanistan to 100,000. Tomorrow I will offer an analysis of the President's plan.

The community I represent in Cleveland, Ohio, is suffering from massive unemployment, record home foreclosures, and small business failures. People are losing their jobs, their health care, their homes, their savings, their investments, and their retirement security. The middle class is gravely threatened. What is happening in Cleveland is occurring nationwide. Yet, Wall Street received over $13 trillion in bailouts, with untold millions for high salaries and bonuses, while Main Street loses its power through unemployment, reduced wages and benefits and little or no access to credit or investment capital. There is something fundamentally wrong with our economy which borrowing more money to spend on war cannot and will not cure. Perhaps nation building should begin at home.

An escalation of the war in Afghanistan at a time of such economic dislocation and hardship raises questions about America's priorities and whether or not we are losing our way as we attempt to stride aside the globe as some Colossus. Tomorrow we will begin anew the discussion.

The Rape party

[...]Complicating matters for the Arab states is the fact that they have substantial populations that do care about the fate of the Palestinians. These states thus are caught between public passion on behalf of Palestinians and the regimes’ interests that are threatened by the Palestinian cause. The states’ challenge, accordingly, is to appear to be doing something on behalf of the Palestinians while in fact doing nothing.

The United States has a vested interest in the preservation of these states. The futures of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states are of vital importance to Washington. The United States must therefore simultaneously publicly demonstrate its sensitivity to pressures from these nations over the Palestinian question while being careful to achieve nothing — an easy enough goal to achieve.

The various Israeli-Palestinian peace processes have thus served U.S. and Arab interests quite well. They provide the illusion of activity, with high-level visits breathlessly reported in the media, succeeded by talks and concessions — all followed by stalemate and new rounds of violence, thus beginning the cycle all over again.

On torture
It turns out that the methods which were encouraged by the Bush administration were created by reverse engineering another U.S. military program called "SERE" (for Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape).[...] The specific techniques SERE was designed to counteract were the techniques used during the Korean war to get false confessions from our soldiers for propaganda purposes.

On Proposition 8
To my liberal friends who are trying to collect signatures to invalidate Proposition 8

1) I believe in self-government; if 50%+1 in California want to be restrictive religious freaks, I should not have the right to stop them (other than moving to California and voting against them).

2) If gay marriage is illegal in California and legal in Massachusetts, that may mean more tourism and immigration to Massachusetts. We need tourist's dollars and we need working hands (we have a climatic disadvantage when it comes to comparing to California). So the worse things are in California, the better they are in Massachusetts by comparison.

3) On the more philosophical side of the argument, government shouldn't be in the business of regulating marriage to begin with (and no, I don't believe in the "marriage is a basic right" theory). How and whom people marry should be decided only by them and their religion (and you do know there's only one true religion - Pastafarianism, right? if not, check the link in my signature). So while explicitly allowing gay marriage a la Massachusetts is better than explicitly disallowing it a la California (and lots of redneck states which no one cares about and no one tries to collect signatures against), it's still worse than not dealing with marriage on the government level at all.

May you be forever touched by His Noodly Appendage... ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster )

Chomsky: Is There Truth in Obama's Advertising?
markets are supposed to be based on informed consumers making rational choices. But industry spends hundreds of millions of dollars a year to undermine markets and to ensure, you know, to get uninformed consumers making irrational choices. And when they turn to selling a candidate they do the same thing. They want uninformed consumers, you know, uninformed voters to make irrational choices based on the success of illusion, slander, and effective body language or whatever else is supposed to be significant.

Civil disobedience, baby!

Bush wanted to give a xmas present to his oil friends, attempting to sell federal lands. Local conservation organizations sued, more than half of proposed land was pulled off the sale, but the rest still went for auction. A regular guy, a student, showed up at the auction and started bidding the parcels up. After driving some other parcels' price more than $500K, he himself won 10 bids for almost $2M total. Of course, he had neither the money nor the intention to pay. Therefore, the feds need to hold a new auction, which has to be announced 30 days prior, so it won't happen while Bush is still in office. Obama might cancel the sale altogether.

A long (2 hours) program on Pirate Cat radio with Jello Biafra in the studio.
A lot of fluff, and a lot of California and SF-specific issues. But there's a very important part starting about 1:47:00

"OK, we are anti-abortion, therefore we are pro-life, even though we don't give a damn what happens to that child once they are born. We ain't gonna give them money for school, or let the single mom stay home with the kid and get a welfare check, we are happy to put them in prison and kill them in the war, otherwise - fuck you. We don't care about your life at all and, boy, do we love the death penalty and wars and that's why we are pro-life. And hey, we are patriotic, because we love it when the Constitution is burned on the bonfire, oh that's so patriotic."

People who say they love family values - they hate kids. They absolutely hate kids, especially poor kids. Once they are born, they just want them, well, maybe not exterminated, but at least put into crappy schools and then sent to jail.

Massachussetts - politics as usual
John Buonomo, the Democratic Middlesex County probate register charged with stealing from the Registry of Deeds in Cambridge, was elected without opposition despite his recent resignation, which came too late to remove his name from the ballot.

Buonomo is widely expected to withdraw from the race, at which point the ward and town Democratic committees in Middlesex County will pick a replacement to put on the November ballot.

Mass Primaries
On September 8, 2008, John Buonomo resigned from his position as the Register of the Middlesex Family and Probate Court. He was caught stealing thousands of dollars from the copying machines at the court. There is a posted youtube video with footage from the security cameras that caught him in the act.

Mass has primaries tomorrow. In a lot of places all real political decisions are made there, because November elections are won by whoever happens to be Democratic candidate; so if you are in one of these places, it might make sense to go and vote. Here: http://www.imagineelection.com/ you can put in your address (put your neighbor's address if you are concerned about privacy) and see who is going to be on the bulletin and read the candidates' biographies. Here's the funniest one: On September 8, 2008, John Buonomo resigned from his position as the Register of the Middlesex Family and Probate Court. He was caught stealing thousands of dollars from the copying machines at the court. There is a posted youtube video with footage from the security cameras that caught him in the act.
Unless enough people write in other candidate's name, this crook will be an official Dem candidate.

Patriot Act blockage a blow to freedom
CHARLES STEPHENSON
Somerville
I am amazed and shocked that Republican senators would turn traitor to side with the Democrats in opposing the extension of the Patriot Act. Liberals need to realize the war in Iraq is just one battle in the greater war against Islamofascism, and the president’s hands should not be tied in fighting for freedom. The Patriot Act gave the authorities the power to go after terrorists, terrorist supporters and subversives. The senators who opposed extension of the Patriot Act have won a battle for the terrorists. President Bush should just declare the Patriot Act a law and have the opposing senators arrested. Friday was a sad day for freedom.
