The White Fragility".

Morden: During our last meeting you were talking about

someone's friend on someone's lap when there were actual
kids who were saying there are racist acts in your school!
Sad! You are sad! But today you want to talk about...

Broshi: Ben!...It hurts people when they see a white man
bouncing a brown baby on their lap and they don't know the
context! That is harmful! It makes people cry! It makes
people log out of our meeting! They don't come here! They
don't come to our meetings! And they give me a hard time
because I'm not vocal enough! And I'm not trying to be a
martyr! I'm trying to illustrate to you that you think I'm
a f**k-excuse me-you think I'm a social justice warrior!
And you think I'm being patronizing and I'm getting
pressure for not being enough of an advocate! And I take
that to heart and that hurts me! And I have to learn to be
a better white person!

Wrocklage: I would like to know before this meeting
adjourns how having my friend's nephew on my lap was
hurtful to people and was racist. Can you please explain?

Broshi: Tom! I've explained it to you! You can Google-you
can read a book! Read [inaudible]! Read White Fragility!
Read How to Talk to White People! It's not my job to

https://reason.com/2018/08/27/rutgers-says-professors-facebook-opinion/

Rutgers Says: Professors' Facebook Opinions Can Be
Punished for Disrupting "the University's Core Function of
Educating a Diverse Student Body"

Rutgers received many complaints, and earlier
this month affirmed the decision (by the Director of the
Office of Employment Equity, Lisa Grosskreutz) that this
speech violated the University's Policy Prohibiting
Discrimination and Harassment, and was unprotected by the
First Amendment. Livingston now faces possible
disciplinary action.

But Rutgers' justification for punishing Livingston's
speech would of course not be at all limited to such
racist diatribes. Rather, the decision rests on the theory
that:

1. "Rutgers has a core commitment to diversity, promising
'everyone joining us as a student, professor, or
member of staff [that] [w]e at Rutgers will accept you
for who you are. That promise of inclusiveness is the
foundation of our strength as an academic
institution. We believe that bringing diverse groups
together into an inclusive community empowers
individuals and gives rise to fresh, innovative
ideas.'"

2. "It is reasonable to predict that the university's
core function of educating a diverse student body may
be disrupted by Professor Livingston's public
statements."

3. Public reports of Livingston's speech "have inflicted
reputational damage on the university" and on
Livingston's department.

4. "Given Professor Livingston's insistence on making
disparaging racial comments, a reasonable student may
have concerns that he or she would be stigmatized in
his classes because of his or her race."

The report argues that government employee speech can be
punished, despite the First Amendment, when it seems
likely to cause sufficient disruption. But, first, even if
the First Amendment allows university professors to be
disciplined (or even fired) on these grounds, that doesn't
mean it's a good idea for universities to adopt such a
rule. Perhaps a professor's sharp criticism of certain
religious ideologies, for instance, might alienate some
students, or might cause loss of donations. But supressing
speech on that basis would itself sharply disrupt the
universities as places where people have to be free to
discuss controversial, even offensive, ideas—and, as I
said, the universities' rationale would apply to serious
discussion of ideas and not just insults such as
Livingston's.

https://www.thefire.org/fired-for-his-views-unt-math-professor-brings-free-speech-lawsuit/
https://www.jamesgmartin.center/2020/05/math-professor-mocks-a-leftist-belief-and-gets-fired/

After earning his PhD in mathematics from Baylor University in spring 2019, Nathaniel Hiers found employment at UNT. He began teaching full-time as an adjunct faculty member in the fall semester—three sections of linear algebra and one of calculus. The mathematics department thought highly enough of Dr. Hiers that, in November, it notified him that he was invited to renew his contract for the coming semester. Hiers promptly emailed back to say he’d accept the school’s offer.

Trouble for Hiers began, however, on November 25. He was relaxing in the faculty lounge that afternoon, waiting for a colloquium to begin, and noticed a stack of fliers. They weren’t identified as a university document and had been left anonymously. The subject of the fliers was “microaggressions” and the argument they made was that such speech, although unintentional, is harmful to some individuals’ physical and psychological health. Therefore, faculty members were encouraged to avoid them.

The flier gave a number of examples of microaggression such as saying, “I believe the most qualified person should get the job” and “America is a land of opportunity.”

Those expressions, according to the flier, are harmful
because they support “the myth of meritocracy” and promote
“color blindness.” Another example of a microaggression
listed was “being forced to choose Male or Female when
completing basic forms.”

All that Hiers did after reading the flier was to write on the chalkboard, “Please don’t leave garbage lying around,” with an arrow pointing to the stack of them. He couldn’t imagine the trouble his jest would cause him.

On the afternoon of November 26, mathematics department chairman Ralf Schmidt sent an email to the entire department with a picture of Hiers’ chalkboard note and the text, “Would the person who did this please stop being a coward and see me in the chair’s office immediately.” Hiers did go to Schmidt’s office, where Schmidt made it clear that he objected to Hiers’ mockery. He called his chalkboard message “stupid” and insisted that he apologize for having expressed his derogatory thoughts about microaggressions.

When Hiers responded that he saw no reason to apologize,
Schmidt asked if he’d be interested in further “diversity
training” beyond that which UNT already requires for its
faculty. Hiers replied that he was not interested since he
was scheduled to take the mandatory “training” in a few
days, which he did on December 1.

What did not occur at that meeting was anything resembling a reasoned discussion about the merits of the microaggression concept. But while Schmidt was obviously angry that Hiers was a non-believer, he did not indicate that he intended to take further action.

On December 2, Hiers came to campus to sign his contract for the coming semester. He was informed by William Cherry, the assistant departmental chairman, that the document was in professor Schmidt’s office but that he was not in at that time. Later in the day, however, Hiers received an email from Cherry. It said that the department had terminated his employment and that he would not be teaching in the spring semester.

Hiers then emailed Schmidt to ask why he had been
fired. Schmidt replied that his decision to terminate his
employment “was based on your actions in the lounge on
11/26 and your subsequent response.” He went on to say
that in his opinion, the statements in the microaggression
flier “make very much sense,” that Hiers’ chalkboard
message was “upsetting and can even be perceived as
threatening,” and that writing anonymous messages was
troubling.

Finally, Schmidt said that he decided to fire Hiers
because he refused to recant his opposition to the
microaggression idea. He summed up by declaring to Hiers,
“Your actions and response are not compatible with the
values of this department.”

5th Circuit affirms right to fire LSU professor for excessive use of profanity in classroom
April 2, 2019 by David L. Hudson Jr.

A former tenured professor fired for excessive use of profanity in the classroom did not have her First Amendment free-speech rights violated, a federal appeals court has ruled.

The decision could have a damaging impact upon academic freedom and a real chilling effect on professorial expression.

The case involved Dr. Teresa Buchanan, a tenured associate professor at Louisiana State University (LSU) who taught in the Early Childhood Program for teacher education.

In November 2013, a public school superintendent complained about Buchanan’s lack of professionalism when she visited schools in the district. A group of students also complained about Buchanan’s use of profanity and sexual-themed comments.

An investigation began after these complaints. A faculty committee found that Buchanan had violated two provisions of the university’s sexual harassment policy and recommended that she be censured. However, the president of the university terminated Buchanan’s employment.

She sued in federal court, alleging a violation of her
rights to free speech and academic freedom. She also
challenged the constitutionality of the university’s
sexual harassment policy. In 2018, a federal district
court rejected her claims and ruled in favor of the
university defendants.

5th Circuit says academic freedom does not extend to all
speech in classroom

https://quillette.com/2020/03/06/ive-been-fired-if-you-value-academic-freedom-that-should-worry-you/

Until a week ago, I was a tenure-track assistant professor at a small college. Then I was fired. And although I am but one professor at one small college in one small town, I want to persuade you that, if you care about free speech and free inquiry in academia, you should be alarmed by my termination. My troubles began in October 2019 when I was invited to address an evolutionary group at the University of Alabama. I had decided that I would discuss human population variation, the hypothesis that human biological differences are at least partially produced by different environments selecting for different physical and psychological traits in their populations over time. I planned to defend this view as most consistent with a Darwinian understanding of the world.

My first day in Tuscaloosa was uneventful. On the second day, I visited a class and had an enjoyable discussion with students about various topics, including human evolution and social signaling. I was then supposed to meet professors and students for lunch, but instead my guide delivered me to an empty room where I received a number of texts from my host: The professors had found my RationalWiki entry, which accuses me—inter alia—of writing “racist bullshit for the right-wing online magazine Quillette.”

Notwithstanding its name, which indicates a commitment to thought and reason, RationalWiki is a highly partisan and tendentious site which its authors use to mock and defame their political opponents. (They have also refused to update misinformation about my work and views even after I have written corrections.) Which is to say that it is not a reliable source of information about anything, still less a sound basis upon which to judge a person’s character. Professors routinely warn their students not to cite Wikipedia, but the lies and misrepresentations on my RationalWiki page were thought to be so unanswerable that the faculty who read them refused to meet with me so I could speak in my own defense. (A handful of other curious professors did extend me the courtesy of a meeting, and we enjoyed a perfectly civil chat.)

I assumed that my scheduled talk would be cancelled, but it was not. I thought the room would be empty, but it was not. Word had evidently spread and a number of angry students were in attendance. The atmosphere was hostile, and the audience was eager to challenge me, but I was able to deliver my talk as planned. The Q and A that followed was quite rowdy, however—one of the students yelled that I was a racist and someone else accused me of promoting the long-discredited pseudoscience of phrenology. And so on. It was not an especially cordial or constructive exchange of ideas.

Shortly after my talk, the student newspaper published a clearly slanted article about the event that casually quoted anonymous criticism that my work “resembles the pseudoscience employed by eugenicists.” This criticism was completely irrelevant to my talk, in which I never discussed anything resembling “eugenics,” and was likely included to poison the study of human biological variation by associating it with other unsavory intellectual traditions. The group that invited me to speak also issued an unconditional apology to attendees of my talk and vowed to do better. My lecture, they explained, was “non-scientific” (it formed the basis for an article that passed three reviewers at a professional psychology journal) and they had been unaware of what I planned to say (I had provided them with an outline of my talk at least two months in advance, which they had approved). And as soon as controversy arose, they denounced me and my expressed views (most of which are undisputed in the relevant literature), and explained that the invitation they had extended had been a mistake.

When the newspaper article was emailed by persons unknown to my university’s provost and president, I was called for a meeting. They were not terribly pleased, but the meeting was uneventful and I was told to be more strategic in my navigation of such a sensitive topic. I agreed that I would try. A few months later, however, someone using a pseudonym began emailing my provost, my president, and my entire department (but not me) links to my articles (including those written for this outlet) and screenshots of “offensive” tweets. My anonymous accuser held me to be guilty of all kinds of treachery and threatened to inform the board of trustees of my sins.

A few days later, however, my boss informed me, without any warning, that the college was not renewing my contract—in other words, they were firing me. I don’t know if my paper was the proximate cause of my firing, but in the light of the foregoing weeks’ tumult, it was plausibly the last straw. Nevertheless, I was nonplussed. Fired? I had worried vaguely about such an eventuality, but didn’t really think it would happen. I naively assumed that the norms of academic freedom would prevail. They did not.

My situation might strike you as trivial and insignificant. And, indeed, I am insignificant. But my firing is not. I did not enjoy the protection of tenure (I was, however, tenure-track), but we should not rely upon tenure to uphold free inquiry. Academic health is not served by a message that tenure can only be secured by those prepared to embrace political orthodoxies. After all, if tenure is intended to protect people who challenge dogmas and orthodoxies, why would we support a system that punishes non-conformists and that sieves them out before they are capable of safely challenging prevailing views?

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/controversial-nova-scotia-professor-fired-after-fire-storm-over-comments

WOLFVILLE, N.S. — A Nova Scotia professor who stoked a national debate about free speech on campus after making controversial comments on social media and in the classroom has been fired.

Acadia University confirmed Friday that Rick Mehta has been dismissed, several months after the Wolfville, N.S., school launched a formal investigation into complaints against the psychology professor.

Mehta could not immediately be reached for comment on Friday. However, he retweeted a blog article that discussed his firing.

Last month, he said in an email that the only way he could have a copy of the investigation report by MacKay was by signing an agreement, which he called a “gag order.”

Mehta was outspoken both on campus and online about a range of contentious issues including decolonization, immigration and gender politics, garnering both supporters and opposition.

He came under fire for saying multiculturalism is a scam, denying the wage gap between men and women, and dismissing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as a vehicle for “endless apologies and compensation.”

I certainly expected to see more evidence of the past decade that college teachers understood the urgent need to address the general public about the educational reform. But American humanities departments have been amazingly stagnant in this period, demoralized in some cases by factionalism or by financial pressure. Few new ideas have emerged, and no rising major critics or scholars are visible on the horizon. Bread-and-butter issues have come to the fore, such as the long-overdue recognition by the profession of the outrageous exploitation of part-time teachers and graduate students.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckminster_Fuller
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Leary

https://chelnokov-ac.livejournal.com/7987.html
