I was really surprised in a positive way after listening to Elton John's first album "Empty Sky". I can describe the lavish sound of this album only as baroque and prog-pop. Basically Elton John in the beginning o his career would feet well sharing stage with Procol Harum and Ziggy Stardust. This complex structure of music is the very character for London at late 60' and early 70'. The topics of some songs were also surprising. Basically the topic is "fantasy adventure". The second song in this album "Val-Hala" is literally about Vikings ascending to Valhala. The lyrics "And this heaven is the home \\ Of every man who loves his sword \\ And he uses it for freedom \\ To preach the word of Thor" could belong to a viking-metal anthem. I also like a new wave science-fiction flavored song "Hymn 2000", where Elton with such a passion drawls words "In surgical dissection"! In the song "Scaffold" Elton also sings such metal verses as "The Minotaur with bloody hands \\ Is enraged by the sun \\ Caged he by the corpses \\ Brought forth by the dawn \\". But all these songs don't sound as metal. As I said before they sound like baroque pop. So this album is very whimsical and fantasy. Personally I find this funny and adorable. But it's clearly not for everybody. As some of the more popish Elton's song can sound annoying and pretentious, even the aforementioned "Scaffold". And as I understand the sound of this album is very different from the sound which made Elton famous (I don't know anything about it).

The second "S/T" album is a for more polished but standard pop-rock experience. Though, it seems still not be of a taste of modern Elton's fans. There is enough generic pop anthems and seed of country rock carcinoma, that will rise in the next album "Tumbleweed Connection", are already planted. Nevertheless I liked a couple of songs here that retain this pseudo-classical baroque sound of the first album. I think "60's years on", "The King must die", and "Grey Seal" are very beautiful songs, which partially retain the fantasy entourage of the first album.
